Satoru Eguchi

Tijdelijke installatie

De Japans-New Yorkse kunstenaar Satoru Eguchi heeft tijdens zijn werkperiode die hij doorbracht in Lokaal 01 Antwerpen een deel van het bureau van de galerie, inclusief de kleine keuken, opnieuw gemaakt. Zijn 'kopie' bouwde hij vlak tegenover het origineel zodat de installatie een soort reflectie werd  van de bestaande ruimte. Hierbij verlaagde Satoru de hoogte van het originele plafond tot zijn eigen hoogte zodat hij, wanneer hij zijn werk betreedt, zich lichtjes moet buigen. Zo ervaart men de nieuwe ruimte net iets onder ooghoogte wat intiem maar tegelijk ook ongemakkelijk aanvoelt.

De meeste voorwerpen, waaronder bureaus, stoelen, de gootsteen maar ook verlengsnoeren en asbakken werden nagemaakt in papier en in hun 'originele' kleuren beschilderd. Veeleer dan alle voorwerpen identiek na te maken, probeert Eguchi ze te interpreteren met de hand, met een toets van organische imperfectie zodat elk ogenschijnlijk triviaal voorwerp in de ruimte om aandacht vraagt.

Door een uiterst gewone ruimte, in dit geval het bureaulokaal van Lokaal 01 Antwerpen, te herscheppen, probeert Eguchi een situatie te creëren waarin je de dagelijkse werkelijkheid anders kunt ervaren.

Eguchi (1973) studeerde in Japan en NY en maakt sculpturen en 'tekeningen' uit eenvoudige materialen als papier, karton en verf. Tijdens zijn werkperiode bij Lokaal 01 Antwerpen, van 5 maart tot 3 april herschiep Eguchi het volledige bureaugedeelte van de ruimte compleet in spiegelbeeld in zijn vertrouwde materialen.

De opening  van Satoru Eguchi in Antwerpen zal plaatsvinden op 4 april om 20 uur. Zijn werk zal ook te zien zijn op 5 en 6 april, van 13 tot 17 uur.

During his working period at Lokaal 01, Satoru Eguchi (born in Japan, studied in Japan and New York) is re-creating part of the office space of Lokaal 01 Antwerp, which includes a small kitchen. His piece will be built directly opposite to the real space so that his installation becomes like a reflection of the already existing space.
The height of the original ceiling is lowered to the height below his own actual height so when he enters his space he has to bend a little. Also, because of this lowered ceiling, he experiences the space slightly below his actual eye level, which feels intimate and uneasy at the same time.
Most objects, including desks, chairs and the kitchen sink, but also small items such as extension chords and ashtrays will be made of paper and be painted in their actual colours. Rather than copying everything precisely the same way as the actual objects, Eguchi interprets each item by hand with a sense of organic imperfection so that each seemingly unimportant object in the space calls for attention.
By re-creating the most ordinary scene - in this case, the office space of Lokaal 01 Antwerp - Eguchi wants to create a situation in which such an ordinary scene can be experienced differently.
